What is the 50 meter dash test?
The 50 meter dash test measures speed — how quickly a student can sprint a short, straight distance from a standing start.
50 Meter Dash Test diagram
Who takes the 50 meter dash test
Age 9–18 — Class 4 to 12.
Equipment
- A flat, clear surface at least 60 m long
- Stopwatch (accurate to 0.1 s)
- Start and finish markers
50 Meter Dash Test procedure
- Students do a thorough warm-up, including some practice starts.
- The student takes a static (“dead”) start with one foot in front of the other; the front foot must be on or behind the start line.
- On the signal, start the watch; the student sprints through the finish line. The tester encourages the student to stay low, drive the arms and legs, and run hard through the finish.
- Stop the watch as the student’s torso crosses the finish line.
50 Meter Dash Test scoring
- Score is the time in seconds — a lower time is better.
Enter the score in the fitness calculator to get the level and points for one student, or use class analysis for a whole class.
Teacher tips
- Tell students to run through the line, not stop at it.
- Time two students at once only if you have two timers.
How to improve
Activities suggested in the Fit India protocol:
- Quick sprints
- Frog hops
- One-leg hops
- Leg stretching to increase stride length
- For speed with change of direction (agility): 10 m shuttle run, zigzag run, agility hurdles, “Two Jumps Forward, One Jump Back”, “Squat Out / Hop In”, lateral jumps with an agility ladder, criss-cross rope jumping
50 Meter Dash Test norms by age
Score ranges for each level L1–L7, for boys and girls, from the Fit India benchmarks. Points for each level are shown in the header.
Unit: seconds · Lower is better · Ranges below use the default PDF boundary rule. “—” means no score can reach that level for that age as printed in the PDF.

50 Meter Dash Test for Class 11 and 12 Physical Education
Students in Class 11 and 12 Physical Education often record this test in their practical file. A complete write-up ofthe 50 meter dash test has the aim, the equipment, the procedure, a labelled diagram (you can redraw the one above), the scoring method and your own result with its level from the norms table.
For all the tests on one page, see the printable practical file summary on the SAI Khelo India Fitness Test page.
Frequently asked questions
Some rows look odd in the table — why?
For a few ages the PDF prints levels whose ranges overlap. The tool keeps them exactly as printed and checks levels in order, so the table may show a level as unreachable.
How do I write up the 50 meter dash test in a Class 12 Physical Education practical file?
Write the aim (what the 50 meter dash test measures), the equipment, the procedure step by step, a labelled diagram, how it is scored, and your own result with the level from the norms table. The SAI Khelo India Fitness Test page has a printable summary of every test.
