What is the partial curl up test?
The partial curl up test measures the strength and endurance of the abdominal (stomach) muscles. A curl-up only counts when the hands slide the full 6 inches and the upper back returns to the floor.
Partial Curl Up Test diagram
Who takes the partial curl up test
Age 9–18 — Class 4 to 12.
Equipment
- Cushioned, flat surface with two parallel strips 6 inches (about 15 cm) apart
- Stopwatch
- A partner to count
Partial Curl Up Test procedure
- The student lies on their back with knees bent at about 90°, feet flat on the floor and arms straight by the sides with palms facing down.
- On “Go”, the student curls up so that the hands slide along the ground at least 6 inches (about 15 cm) towards the parallel strip.
- The student then lowers back until the shoulder blades / upper back touch the floor.
- Repeat at a steady pace for 30 seconds. Count only curl-ups done with the correct form.
Partial Curl Up Test scoring
- Score is the number of correct curl-ups in 30 seconds — more is better.
Enter the score in the fitness calculator to get the level and points for one student, or use class analysis for a whole class.
Teacher tips
- Keep the feet on the floor — do not hook them under a bar.
- Neck stays relaxed; the movement comes from the stomach.

Partial Curl Up Test for Class 11 and 12 Physical Education
Students in Class 11 and 12 Physical Education often record this test in their practical file. A complete write-up ofthe partial curl up test has the aim, the equipment, the procedure, a labelled diagram (you can redraw the one above), the scoring method and your own result with its level from the norms table.
For all the tests on one page, see the printable practical file summary on the SAI Khelo India Fitness Test page.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a level show as empty in the table?
For some ages the official PDF prints a range like “from X to X”, which leaves one level with no possible score. The default PDF rule keeps that; the optional Office rule moves a score of exactly X up one level.
How do I write up the partial curl up test in a Class 12 Physical Education practical file?
Write the aim (what the partial curl up test measures), the equipment, the procedure step by step, a labelled diagram, how it is scored, and your own result with the level from the norms table. The SAI Khelo India Fitness Test page has a printable summary of every test.
